Control System Integration Jobs: Hire a SWAN

By Marty Michael on Aug 27, 2009

Engineering is a very diverse discipline. At Avanceon we need thinkers and doers, inventors and implementers, designers and troubleshooters. Sometimes one person contains all of these skills, though more often a team comes together to complement each others' skills. The whole is greater than the parts.

When it's time to hire most of us look for the standard requirements, probably including some sort of specific experience or skill set. However, many innovative companies are now focusing more on an individual's personal attributes than where they obtained their degree or what their specific experience is

This successful practice is known as following the SWAN Model: Hiring employees that are Smart, Work Hard, Ambitious and Nice. Though hard to gauge at an interview, these qualities almost guarantee a decent worker. When hiring a non-entry-level person, the SWAN model, coupled with what they've done in the past, is a far better indicator of success than any resume.

    SWAN TEAM

People at Avanceon share a common set of attributes: we are all SWANs! We have found that SWANs likely have what it takes both to help our clients and to be successful at our company. "SWAN" is an acronym for people who possess four qualities: Smart, Work hard, Ambitious, and Nice.

    Smart

We are looking for people with keen minds who may have pursued a variety of academic interests and demonstrated achievement in their chosen fields. Once these people join Avanceon, they can turn their intellects on the problems facing our clients and develop creative, effective solutions.

    Work hard

Being smart is not enough to succeed at Avanceon; you must also be willing to apply yourself every day. We look for people who have demonstrated their ability and willingness to work hard through academic/professional achievement and extracurricular involvement.

    Ambitious

We look for people who set high goals for themselves and then strive to achieve those goals. Implementing our solutions allows us to validate our designs at an operational level, and it takes an ambitious individual to propose and then implement a system that could potentially change the way a company does business.

    Nice

Many companies seek to hire people who are smart, hard working, and ambitious. Avanceon, however, has one additional requirement: you must be nice. Being nice is more than just a measure of one's integrity and character. We work closely both with each other and with our clients to solve problems and implement solutions. We encourage cooperation and sharing among all of our associates and one of the best ways to ensure this high level of cooperation is to hire nice people.

I have always believed that a person’s value to a company was not just the sum of his/her experience, but the overall personality of who the individual is. You can have talent and skills that make you unique, however, if you cannot effectively interact and understand the people you are working with, your skills will not be of any value.

what about if someone has an excellent skills but the people around him in his organization they don't value him as they don't recognize his skills amd don't understand his absurd ideas? Thus, with all due respect I am disagree with your thoughts. I believe if a person has right skills with right engineering decisions then sooner or later people around him will value him ;)
Posted @ Wednesday, September 01, 2010 11:03 AM by Ali
    @ Ali,

If an automation engineer skill set is not recognized, how can he/she make right engineering decisions? As an engineer you must be able to interact with co-workers, supervisors, and customers. You cannot evaluate what is required from somebody unless you understand and can interpet their needs.

One of the most significant skill an engineer can have is the ability to listen and understand.

    @ Guy
Albert Einstein said that If at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.
No colleague listens someone's ideas even if the understanding level is too high, and even if someone listens then there is no hope for it implementation. Colleagues listen someone only if he/she has strong convincing skills and that doesn't under the same of umbrella of understanding.
Like James Cann (British entrepreneur) early decided to not to join his family business although his understandning with his father was too good and now he has 100 global offices. It doesn't even matter if someone doesn't understand the needs of customer as far as he/she can convince the customer and sell the product to customer even if the product is fully or partially required by the customer, for example sometimes the call centre's people annoy too much that at the end atleast they sell something. Business means profit and that one can make even by selling garbage. Also, if one can convince then colleague will automatically understand him/her. Localization is important but if there is no globalization then what will be localized. For example, if one is grew up in states & graduated from MIT, and then he/she relocates to any 3rd world country where he/she joins a company as an engineer although he/she localizes himself by developing strong understanding with his/her new colleagues but if he/she has no right skills then he/she will not able to survive even in that new company of new country.
One more thing look at this page loads of engineers from Pakistan they are literally begging to work for this company as a new applicant they have ZERO understanding with the employer and No one has been advised by employer that to apply through appropriate channel and that's because these guys are not working hard enough or as I can say that they are failed to convince the employer (Avanceon).
Please don't take my comments too serious if you don't understand them :) these are just my personal experiences.

    @ Ali,

    I think I understand your comments, I have been down that very road in my working travels. As an older (50+) and hopefully wiser man, I have discovered a couple of things;

    1. Things laways work out, it may not be what you want, it will get you to the next day.

    2. Engineering is the art5 of orginal thought applied to someone else's problem.

    3. Automation has several layers to it.

This may sound a bit disconnected, but the end result is, you have to know what you want and then you can figure out how to get it. In engineering you get what you want by designing a product that not only solves the customer's issue that they are currently facing, it also solves the problems he/she has yet to face.

    @ Guy
    1. Things laways work out, it may not be what you want, it will get you to the next day.
    Answer:
Fully agree, but what if the team or the culture of organization is poor? In that case individual will not be blamed. For example, Jesus was right but the people at his time denied him because they were wrong. And there was hole in his team (Juda) due to whom Jesus was crucified.
    2. Engineering is the art5 of orginal thought applied to someone else's problem.
    Answer:
Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems.
    Scott Adams

    3. Automation has several layers to it.
    Answer:
The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.
    Bill Gates

This is right that you are older than me but age doesn't prove the level of wisdom, as Linus Pauling said "When an old and distinguished person speaks to you, listen to him carefully and with respect -- but do not believe him. Never put your trust into anything but your own intellect. Your elder, no matter whether he has gray hair or has lost his hair, no matter whether he is a Nobel laureate -- may be wrong. The world progresses, year by year, century by century, as the members of the younger generation find out what was wrong among the things that their elders said. So you must always be skeptical -- always think for yourself."

As an engineer & researcher I believe that engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practicing the art of the organizing forces of technological change ... Engineers operate at the interface between science and society.

    You said:
This may sound a bit disconnected, but the end result is, you have to know what you want and then you can figure out how to get it. In engineering you get what you want by designing a product that not only solves the customer's issue that they are currently facing, it also solves the problems he/she has yet to face.
    Answer:
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
    Douglas Adams

P.S. BTW, I am happy to see your prompt replies even at this age :)
